Cheesecake

In the community audio chat on Saturday a discussion was started about cheesecake. I love a good cheesecake. I would probably solely travel somewhere if I heard there was good cheesecake there. So for fun, do you have good cheesecake where you live? And if not, what is the dessert that your area is known for?

In Orange County, California, we have all sorts of trendy desserts in every strip mall that there is. But I would say that our doughnuts (Are doughnuts even a dessert?) are on point. We have so many independent doughnut shops in OC, which means that they have to keep raising the bar with good doughnuts. OC is also famous for the frozen chocolate bananas on a stick.

John- I’m in love with donuts! Why do they have a stranglehold on me?! I prefer a mom & pop shop to a chain. I love a chocolate bar and a pink crueler. Cheesecakes are delicious, too. Chocolate chip cookies rank pretty high for a dessert for me, too. 🥰

Pancakes are so good. And just for everyone’s knowledge, pancakes (pannenkoeken in the Netherlands) there are thinner and larger than what everyone is used to in the US. For me the different consistency and mouth feel almost makes it a different experience (But also a different experience to a crepe as well). If you are ever in the Netherlands, do not miss an opportunity to try it!

We do have cheesecake around the UK in many many flavours I used to make all sorts but the best one for me was a Nutella cheesecake or a triple chocolate one yum yum 😋

But I think the UK is probably known for the sticky toffee pudding, I used to serve mine with butterscotch sauce and clotted cream it’s always a good seller in the pubs

I like a good sticky toffee pudding. Unfortunately not as much as other desserts because it is good. I know it is a favorite of many!!!

Louisiana checking in…ours has to be beignets. Hot fried dough absolutely smothered in powdered sugar, preferably with café au lait. They’re messy as hell, completely unapologetic about it, and impossible to eat without licking powdered sugar off your fingers afterward. So naturally, I’m a fan. 😉

New Orleans gets most of the credit, but beignets are very much a South Louisiana thing. And if you’ve only ever had some sad little version outside Louisiana, I’m not sure it counts. 😂

Also, doughnuts are absolutely dessert. I will not be taking questions on this. 😘

SO, my go to is (and it is a ..staple here in Alaska especially in the bush) rhubarb crisp. Sometimes there are strawberries added. Because rhubarb is so plentiful here and grows and regrows like weeds, you can get many cuttings out of one plant. The last time I processed rhubarb for canning I did a whole wheelbarrow = 40lbs.
Rhubarb, for those who are unfamiliar, its a plant with huge leaves, it has stalks (texture is similar to.. celery) that are eaten. It is VERY tart but when combined with something sweet – is AMAZING. A rhubarb crisp is very similar to a cobbler only less bready. Served hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is best. Although, room temperature right out of the dish has been know to be just as good. 😉

I would die right now for beignets @lolamayi12345. They are incredible! And I was more teasing about doughnuts not being desserts because it is breakfast, but I feel pancakes are in a similar situation!

I think this site needs to have a field trip to Alaska to enjoy this pie. I also think it would be a great bonding opportunity for everyone! Rhubarb crisp anyone?

@anroc… Pancakes are absolutely in the same category. We’ve somehow convinced ourselves if we eat cake covered in butter and syrup before 10am it’s breakfast. I fully support this kind of collective delusion 🤪

@anroc Cinnamon rolls are absolutely both! Coffee cake too. I mean, I’m never going to argue with someone offering me cake for breakfast😊

And I’m with you on Pop-Tarts. Those things are their own weird little category.
