When scholars hear the word Tantra, they think of philosophy, ritual, yoga, cosmology and liberation.
When most people hear the word Tantra, they think of sex.
Few modern academics have done more to restore this complexity than the American Indologist David Gordon White (Professor Emeritus in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara) whose groundbreaking research into medieval Tantric traditions reveals a world where the human body itself became a temple, and its fluids the very vessels of divine power.
White’s work is not sensationalism. It is painstaking scholarship drawn from medieval Sanskrit manuscripts, many of which had remained largely unexplored until he brought them into wider academic discussion. His books, particularly Kiss of the Yoginī and The Alchemical Body, challenge many of our modern assumptions about sexuality, purity and the sacred feminine.
For those of us exploring the forgotten wisdom of lactation and embodied femininity, his research opens an extraordinary doorway.
Beyond Purity and Shame
Certain medieval Kaula Tantric traditions were built upon a radical premise: that the Divine could not be divided into pure and impure.
The famous pañcamakāra, or Five M’s—wine, meat, fish, ritual offerings and sacred sexual union (maithuna)—were not invitations to indulgence but carefully structured initiatory practices designed to dissolve the artificial boundaries imposed by society. The practitioner was invited to move beyond duality itself.
Body and spirit.
Sacred and profane.
Male and female.
Nothing existed outside the Divine.
Within this worldview, sexuality was not merely permitted—it became a language through which the cosmos revealed itself.
The union of lovers mirrored the eternal embrace of Shiva and Shakti, consciousness and creative energy, temporarily becoming one flesh so that the practitioner might glimpse the underlying unity of existence.
The Secret Life of Bodily Fluids
Perhaps the most startling aspect of White’s research concerns the role of bodily fluids.
Modern Western culture tends to categorise such substances as embarrassing, private or even unclean. Medieval Kaula Tantra often viewed them very differently.
White documents how certain initiatory communities regarded semen, female sexual secretions and menstrual blood not as pollutants but as concentrated expressions of Śakti—the dynamic creative force that animates the universe itself.
These fluids were believed to contain spiritual potency because they carried the mystery of creation.
Life emerges through them.
Transformation flows through them.
Power resides within them.
In some ritual contexts, they were treated as sacramental substances, embodiments of the Goddess herself. Rather than rejecting the body in pursuit of enlightenment, these traditions sought awakening through a profound encounter with embodiment.
Where Does Breast Milk Belong?
Interestingly, breast milk occupies a quieter but deeply meaningful place within this symbolic universe.
Unlike sexual fluids, White notes that breast milk appears less frequently in ritual manuals as a prescribed sacrament. Instead, it emerges through a broader theological vision of divine nourishment and maternal power.
If sexual fluids embody creation, breast milk embodies sustenance.
It is the continuation of creation.
The miracle that allows new life not simply to exist, but to flourish.
Within Tantric symbolism, breast milk belongs to the creative current of Śakti. Like every sacred feminine substance, it participates in the divine economy of life. Nourishment itself becomes holy.
This echoes classical Ayurvedic physiology, in which milk is understood as a refined transformation of blood—a subtle distillation of life force itself. Medieval Indian alchemy likewise viewed bodily substances not as isolated secretions but as stages in an ongoing process of energetic refinement.
The body was not a machine.
It was an alchemical vessel.
The Goddess Who Nourishes
White also explores the rich mythology surrounding the Yoginīs and Tantric goddesses.
These are not passive maternal figures.
They are fierce, sovereign embodiments of feminine power who grant wisdom, initiation and transformation.
In some texts, they nourish devotees through divine milk, similarly to what we see in Egypt.
Here, milk is no ordinary food. It becomes amṛta, the nectar of immortality, transmitting spiritual insight rather than mere physical nutrition.
To drink from the Goddess is to receive consciousness itself.
This image invites us to reconsider one of the oldest acts of human intimacy.
Breastfeeding is not only biological or just a sexual kink.
It is relational.
It is energetic.
It is profoundly symbolic.
Across cultures, milk has represented the transmission of love, life, wisdom and belonging.
An Unexpected Parallel
Perhaps most fascinating is how closely these ideas resonate with medieval Christian mysticism.
Long before modern culture stripped breastfeeding of its sacred dimensions, Christian Europe celebrated the nursing Virgin.
The beloved image of the Maria Lactans portrayed the Virgin Mary offering her breast as a source of divine grace. In one of medieval Christianity’s most famous legends, the Lactatio Bernardi, the Virgin miraculously sprays her milk into the mouth of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, transmitting not nourishment alone but heavenly wisdom.
Milk becomes revelation.
Grace made tangible.
The body becomes theology.
Suddenly, medieval Tantra and medieval Christianity—traditions often imagined as worlds apart—appear to share a remarkable intuition.
Both recognised that the feminine body possesses mysteries worthy of reverence.
Both understood nourishment as sacred.
Both saw milk as more than nutrition.
It was communion.
Reclaiming the Forgotten Sacred
Perhaps this is the greatest gift of David Gordon White’s scholarship.
He reminds us that history is often stranger, richer and more beautiful than the stories modern culture tells us.
The sacred feminine was never confined to abstract ideals.
She bled.
She conceived.
She birthed.
She desired.
She nourished.
And through every one of these embodied experiences, countless traditions recognised an encounter with the Divine.
Breast milk, viewed through this lens, is not simply a biological fluid.
It is an ancient symbol of abundance, compassion, transformation and unconditional giving. Whether we encounter it in the temples of medieval India or in the illuminated manuscripts of Christian Europe, it carries the same timeless message: that life itself flows through the feminine, and that within her capacity to nourish resides one of humanity’s oldest experiences of the sacred.
