All primates except for humans develop rounded, full breasts only when they are needed to nurse. Only humans’ breasts grow when puberty begins and remain permanently

So serious question. Why do you think female human breasts evolved to be permanent?

Interesting question – possibly because pregnancy happened a lot given man wants to spread his seed and those babies had to be fed continuously, probably into adolescence? This may have been nature’s way to ensure that there was a sustainable source of food and the subsequent immunity that breast milk provided.

Not just other primates, but all other mammals follow the same pattern. The breasts remain undeveloped until they’re actually needed. Humans are the one exception.

As for an explanation of why, the most sound theory is that we humans unlike all other mammals are visually stimulated by breasts. Why us and no other? Because the other mammals don’t walk upright. The mammaries wouldn’t be in plain sight. The posterior would be the visually stimulating body-part for them (and for us too, that lineage never fully went away).

But for us, the appearance of breasts and cleavage is stimulating precisely because it resembles other, more relevant body-parts necessary for mating. And that they’re placed right up front and center where we can see them in our new upright posture. Incidentally, there’s the added benefit that the breasts make a handy indicator of a woman’s physical health.
