You’ve been selected to create the new Department of Lactation Studies at your local university.

What courses would you include? What are the outcomes for students? Is it something that could realistically exist or is it only possible in fantasy? No limits except your imagination! Here’s my example so far:

    B.A. in Lactation Studies

    Core Curriculum
Take all 10 of the following:
    – General Biology
    – General Psychology
    – Principles of Nutrition
    – Anatomy & Physiology
    – Lifespan Development
    – Human Sexuality
    – Lactation I: Basic Concepts
    – Lactation II: Applied Principles
    – Lactation III: Clinical Issues
    – Lactation IV: Educator Training

    Electives
    Choose 2 of the following:
    – History & Culture of Breastfeeding
    – Public Perceptions & Policy on Breastfeeding
    – Erotic Lactation & Adult Nursing Relationships
    – Chestfeeding: Lactation in the LGBT Community
    – [Other ideas?]

    Option A: Liberal Arts Pathway
Students must complete a minor (or double major) of their choice and a Senior Capstone Project. Some project ideas that students could pursue include:
    – A survey of Venus statuettes in various ancient cultures (art history or anthropology minors)
    – Laboratory research on the effects of drugs on human breastmilk (chemistry or biology minors)
    – A thesis on the recent global formula shortage and its socioeconomic consequences (economics/political science majors)
    – Suckling as a form of sensate focus for surrogate partner therapy (psychology minors)

    Option B: Lactation Consultant Training
Students must complete the following to meet IBLCE education requirements:
    – Introduction to Sociology
    – Introduction to Statistics
    – Essentials for Healthcare Professionals
    – Lactation Consultant Practicum (take 4 times alongside Lactation I-IV)

    Summer Program (optional)
    – “Booby Camp”: Not your everyday summer bootcamp, “Booby Camp” is a multi-week intensive program that helps students work towards inducing and/or increasing their own milk production. Hands-on pumping time, proper TENS use, self-massage, and other strategies are taught. Can repeat as desired.

The Lactation Student Union (LSU) is the official student organization for the department. They do social activities to foster comradery among students, host guest speakers on more nuanced topics, and do community services like milk drives and fund raising for breast cancer research.
