This is my first attempt to write a story like this. My work is usually grimmer with more for my heroine to overcome. But here goes. Hope you enjoy.

    ABF Supermax

Dr. Clara Smolders watched as the large metal door slid aside, accompanied by the usual buzz and metallic clicks and clangs. Their path clear, the Senator and two aides entered the inner sanctum of ABF Supermax.

“Welcome,” Dr. Smolders said, introducing herself as the facility’s warden.

“Thank you for taking the time,” the Senator said, shaking her hand.

“We hope your visit is fruitful. We would love to see this program expand to other facilities. The results we’ve seen here have been nothing short of … remarkable.”

“We’re curious to see what you’re doing here,” the Senator said. The details of this special prison had been vague at best. All that was clear was it was meant to address those inmates who proved beyond rehabilitation. The ones who’d attacked and even killed at other prisons. The ones who, under current circumstances, would pose a national security risk if they were ever set free again.

Still, the facility’s methodology had been almost non-existent in the report. The Senator wondered how it ever made it past the Budget and Judiciary Committees, let alone all the way to the President’s desk, where it received his signature. He knew some heavy lobbying had been done to move the project forward, but even those details were sketchy.

“We house approximately four hundred inmates here,” Dr. Smolders explained, beginning the tour. “The worst of the worst. The ones society has given up on.”

She led the way down a corridor.

“It is our theory that these men and women were never truly nurtured,” she continued. “It is our mission to remedy that and encourage more positive behavior. Most will never live in free society again, no matter what, but that does not mean they cannot be productive within prison walls.”

If that was supposed to answer anything, it didn’t.

“How exactly do you do this?” the Senator asked as they approached another door.

Not answering, Dr. Smolders produced a plastic ID badge and held it up to the scanner.

“This wing is for the newer members of the program,” she described as this door slid open with it’s own buzz. “It is the most secure part of the prison. You’ll be able to see what we are doing, but only through reenforced glass. We take great care to protect our staff and visitors.”

The Senator frowned. He wanted to see this up close, not from behind glass where they could hide God-knows-what.

Dr. Smolders smiled at his frown.

“Don’t worry, Senator,” she said. “You’ll see plenty.”

They approached the first window in the corridor. Inside the room beyond, a man was lying on a gurney, secured by thick, nylon straps across his legs, arms, waist, torso, and shoulders. His head seemed to be resting on a comfortable pillow but was being kept still by some kind of brace.

But what was most astonishing was the woman seated next to the gurney. Her uniform shirt was open and she was breastfeeding the man. Half her sizable breast was in his mouth. The Senator could see his cheeks and neck muscles moving as he suckled and swallowed.

    “My God!” he exclaimed.

Dr. Smolders smiled, not saying anything. She noticed the Senator’s aides, a young man and woman, were likewise staring at the scene on the other side of the glass in pure awe and intrigue. The woman seemed a bit jealous, her own chest not measuring up to the endowments of the prison employee hard at work.

“Does this really work?” the Senator asked.

    “Just wait,” Dr. Smolders encouraged.

They watched as the man finished suckling and the woman pulled her breast away. As she secured her bra and buttoned her top, they could all see his face in full. He looked at peace. He was smiling, and not in a malevolent manner.

What made this all the more shocking was who the man was. They all recognized him. Malcolm Coyle was initially incarcerated for armed robbery. Over the past fifteen years, he’d killed four fellow inmates and a guard in five incidents across three prisons. Everyone thought he was beyond redemption and questioned why he was still alive.

“How long has he participated in this?” the Senator asked.

“About a month,” Dr. Smolders replied, her smile triumphant. “We used to have extra security personnel in the room when he nursed, but we were able to do away with that last week. Give it a little more time and he won’t even need the restraints anymore.”

The Senator stared at the killer’s serine face again. He’d never seen anyone looking happier.

“There are so many challenges to solitary confinement,” Dr. Smolders went on, “and the death penalty is submerged in a quagmire of politics and controversy. We see our program having the positive effects everybody wants.”

She led them to another wing inside the prison, explaining this was where inmates who’d participated for more than six months were kept.

“They have not posed a security risk anymore,” she described. “We’ll continue the accompanying counseling even when we soon move them to a regular prison.”

“Are you worried they might regress?” the Senator asked.

“We haven’t seen this yet, but I’ll admit anything is possible. Maybe we’ll need to treat them here again. We’ll see. That is one reason we want to expand the program to other facilities.”

    The Senator just nodded.

Touring this new wing, they saw infamous criminals like Aldo Sanchez, one of the world’s most notorious drug lords, Kassim Nadolo, who’d attempted to plow a dynamite-laden van into a crowded convention center, Dennis Reed, the founder/leader of the White Power prison gang, and Margaret Keller, a multiple murderer and identity thief … all being nursed, their faces not reflecting the horrific acts which brought them here. They weren’t beyond thick security glass, but in open rooms with no restraints in sight. The employees doing the nursing were lying right on the wide cots with their charges. Each employee certainly possessed the necessary payload to supply the desired bounty. The only corrections officer to be seen was stationed at the entrance to the wing.

“Naturally, we supply supplements and pumps for our employees,” Dr. Smolders said, though no one was listening, “and we carefully screen all applicants so we only take the most professional. Respect is a key part of the process.”

“Wow,” the Senator said, staring. His aides remained likewise transfixed.

“We hope you better understand what we are doing here,” Dr. Smolders said.

“I do,” the Senator replied. “There is just one thing …”

“Oh?” Dr. Smolders queried with a raised eyebrow.

“Yes,” the Senator said, his tone serious behind his smile. “I will need a first-hand demonstration of your process.”

Noticing the two aides also seemed eager to try this out, Dr. Smolders nodded.

“I’m sure some of our staff will be happy to accommodate all of you,” she said.
