Personally I am a language nerd. I love creative use of language, I love decipher languages I don’t speak (it’s decoding or cracking the code) I love a fiery and very fast discussion with an opponent who is a strong debater. Its all to get to know one another. I connect through the mind.
Funny thing us I observed several times that upon meeting someone the moments it was absolutely ‘yes!! NOW please’ had nothing to do with language. In fact, exactly the opposite happened: no words at all!
For example: some people have almost no expression, like nobody is home, the kights were switched off years ago and you are ringing the doorbell as hard as you can, but there is no answer. This guy had eyes to drown in. I could tell there was enormous depth, layers to explore, and sensitive eyes too. The moment it hit was when I saw he was amused. That sudden funny spark. I first hesitated between laughing and being angry because not taken seriously (or so i thought, wasnt true). Untill I realised what was going on.
Hello!!
Not a word however. My question to you all is this one: Do you have a certain way you connect normally and do you rembember clicking with someone who did the exact opposite? Is it the surprise? The sudden tactic? Whats happening? Lets hear it!!
October 22, 2026 at 11:27 am #832201I think it depends on how you define opposites. I don’t need someone who’s just like me. In fact, I appreciate people for their differences. I’m more introverted, but could I be attracted to someone who’s extroverted? Absolutely!
Where opposites become a problem for me is values. How do we see the world? How do we treat others? I’m someone who recycles and tries to be mindful of the world around me. Would I be attracted to someone who casually litters or smokes? Probably not.
I don’t want to change someone into who I think they should be, either. But I do want someone who challenges me to grow, just as I’d hope to challenge them. We should bring out the best in each other, not try to remake each other.
And I think that’s where the real connection happens. Sometimes it’s intellectual, sometimes emotional, and sometimes it’s just a look, a smile, or a little spark that neither person can explain. No words necessary.
We’re all riding around on this little ball spinning through space. Hopefully we can agree that making the world, and each other, a little better is something worth sharing.
So yes, opposites can absolutely attract. But being different and being incompatible are two very different things.
October 22, 2026 at 1:13 pm #832241@showerthoughts, thank you! I dont think of opposites as negative. I just meant the opposite in behaviour you normally fall for.
Its a very good thing people are different. Would be terribly boring in a uniform world.
In fact my partner was really in many ways my opposite. Trying to change rhat would have been the end of the magic.Yes dufferent and compattible are 2 difderent things. Being alike is no guarantee for being compattible either. I ve seen very big clashes, often in families, between people who were very much alike in character
