PRIVATE MESSAGES: Because this is a free website, with unlimited Private Messages available for all users, large numbers of PMs get sent every day. No problem.
However, over time these become a huge backlog, stretching back over months & months. There are currently more than 400,000 – too many, so this will have to be reduced.
So on December 1st 2020 any messages which are at least three months old will be deleted. I can’t read any individual messages, it will just be an automatic removal of all messages which are dated September 1st 2020 or earlier.
If you are in an ongoing conversation with anyone which began before Sep 1st, it’s probably best to start a new message thread.
Repeat: this deletion will happen on December 1st, not before.

I noticed the date displayed on message threads is of the most recent one in the conversation. Is that the date that will be used, or will it be the date of the initial message?
Verdant: it should only be messages sent before September 1st which get deleted. If a conversation “thread” started before Sep 1st and then continues on past Sep 1st, then it will only be the messages in that conversation from before Sep 1st which disappear. The rest of that conversation “thread” will remain.
CORRECTION: looks like ALL the messages in a thread get deleted if the thread started before Sep 1st. But I set the threshold date 3 months back from today, so it really shouldn’t bother anybody.
