I agree (and agreed previously that we are all humans and greedy!) – THOUGH commercialism usually kills pure research but I digress!
(One of the things I am reminded of is how Mercedes Benz developed but chose NOT to benefit globally – as in benefitting monetarily via patent royalties) because they considered human life/safety to be more important. This is such a notable/noble exception!)
Loll before that she was a post doctoral fellow working long hours on a subject just to understand a question. It takes dedication to pursue a PhD for 8 years when you know it barely pays anything. There is no ROI on these kinds of work.
If someone has specialist knowledge or skills they should be able to convert that to an income. A lot of research these days is a collaboration between academia and industry. We shouldn’t be cynical about everything. If you need a plumber, contact a plumber. If you need a lactation expert, contact a lactation expert.

Love your passion Ms Spicy. I find all the research so fascinating and really inspiring. The taste of breastmilk I can only describe as ABF heaven. Spot on boss man for this site name. Thank you for your forum Ms Spicy.
Regarding the recent comment about trivializing breast milk and corporate sponsorship:
1. Research costs dollars, lots of them. If you don’t publish or align with practical use for your research, you perish. Not all professors live on NIH grants alone.
2. Once upon a time, only a few Universities had wind tunnels, we still fly on airplanes, right?
3. The infants who get a custom formula for their condition crafted for their condition are, more likely than not, benefitting, no?
4. ASU pays her a salary as a professor, not royalties. She is still there. I’m waiting to hear from her and will update.

In general I agree with all your points with these comments:
1. To me, the LOGICAL progression to Hinde’s research would have been say: a) Encouraging more mothers to breastfeed their babies b)Encouraging lactating women to donate their precious milk to milk banks c) Evangelize breastfeeding d) Help with animal husbandry as in improve other animals’ milk that humans consume …. “Formula research”, to me, seems like a subset vector3. Agreed though this is hopefully a corner case and not the norm
4. I would assume her research landed her the credentials she has. That was the reward – can one go to school and not pay and/or always expect somebody/something to explicitly compensate specifically or on an ongoing basis? (Then the ends will justify the means – not exactly a good thing, if you ask me!) Education costs – in some way, shape or form! Education has helped her land a job! The problem with “It costs me so somebody/something must pay me” is not exactly fair, in most cases. In fact, it leads to abuse, usually! In that she has a salary, it is not all pro bono, right?

These jobs are not regular 9/5 ones. Even a PhD student has no life other than their research. They are slogging about 60 hours a week for meager wages. Been there, done that so can attest to it. We owe all of the progress we have made in science and research to such researchers such as madame curie etc. Three members of the curie family sacrificed their lives to develop their fields that provided immense leaps in research in their domains. Edward Jenner injected himself with live pox virus to test vaccines and their efficacy. These people are on the front lines of this work like soldiers who are on duty dedicating their lives to research. It’s not just a livelihood for them but a cause for action which is knowledge. Imagine working on something that no one has ever worked on before and hitting so many walls but finally seeing a path forward through sweat and diligence…

As to the age old argument that because one supports industry with basic research, and industry corrupts universally, so researchers must be corrupted by industry… that is a failure of logic. The argument begins to sound more Nestlé-phobic than real. I don’t think Formula Companies invest in research to poison babies. If anything, they want to create the best formula they can, at a price that wins them market share. That is survival of the fittest in industry. I think that basic researchers can be instrumental in holding industry’s feet to the fire based on the results of basic research. I don’t think anyone has been successfuly sued for violating a signed NDA, when the application of the basis of the NDA was deemed a danger to the public. If so, all whistleblowers would be in jail.
As to the end justifies the means, that debate goes on, and just like abortion rights versus killing fetuses, it can never be resolved outside of one’s moral framework. I don’t think having an alignment with industry guarantees you are a monster of evil. In many cases, that cooperation funds new research that finds amazing things… both fuel for the appetite of the basic researcher, and a foundation for industry to launch better products. Researchers have a conscience too, you know.
It’s multi purpose too, what else can you ask for ?!! 🙂 If you have a non-ABF partner in the tub and she asks you what your tattoo stands for you could probably say amazing Arizona male.. lots of possibilities in and outside the tub 😚
