InactiveI grew up where you wore men wore suits and women wore dresses to go out shopping. EVERY man wore a suit to church and EVERY women wore dress. Though I never flew until I was in the military, I remember being at the airport when grandma flew in for a holiday. Again, suits and dresses. Yes, cultural norms have radically changed. The older women still wear dresses to go to church and so some of the younger women. However, both young men and women wear shorts that leve little to the imagination…to church! And what can be said about Walmart or even what people wear on a plane?
So my question is, how important is it to you what someone wears when you meet? I’m going to attach a Jordon Peterson video short with his analysis of dressing poorly.
September 28, 2026 at 4:26 am #818497It might not matter as much these days what people wear.
What matters is if you can trust the person you seek to MAYBE meet.Back in the time period you are referring to sounds like when my grandfather ( my mom’s dad) was newly married. SIGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My parents have told me that he was one of the first people to put seat-belts in his family’s car. ( I was SHOCKED to hear this!!!!!!!!! ( I learned about this AFTER he had died.)) How sad that he never got a trade-mark for the idea. LOL, he could have been a TRILLIONEAIR, buuuuut it did not turn out that way. I guess that is just the way life goes.

September 28, 2026 at 11:21 am #818587I love clothes and I absolutely notice how someone presents themselves. I appreciate a man who knows how to dress, and I’m probably overdressed more often than underdressed myself. So yes, what someone wears can make an impression on me.
But I don’t particularly miss the idea that everyone had to dress a certain way simply because society said that was the respectable thing to do. A man in shorts can be interesting, intelligent and lovely company, and a man in a beautiful suit can still be an insufferable ass.
So I suppose I care about style. I care about effort. I care whether someone seems comfortable in their own skin. I just don’t confuse any of those things with character.

InactiveI wish there was a way as there are in other apps, to give a thumbs up, leave a heart, or just a check mark to indicated that a reply was read, liked, or loved.
September 28, 2026 at 11:36 pm #818945I’m old enough where I had to wear panty hose every single day at one of my first jobs and I am not a fan of it. Is it fun sometimes to dress up? Sure. I want to dress up about once a month, but the rest of the time I like to be casual and comfortable. I do wear casual dresses sometimes, but I had to pause because they are not very practical for pumping or nursing.
I can’t imagine what women went through trying to nurse in those days when they had so many complicated articles of clothing!
September 29, 2026 at 1:04 am #818996Personally, I love when a man looks comfortable and huggable. I don’t really like suits or stiff clothing. I like when a man doesn’t look too primped and prepped. I like a little scruff. I definitely don’t like sloppy or dirty looking. But, I think men can look clean and cuddly in a hoodie and joggers or sweats. I also like a nice cardigan with a tshirt and jeans on a man. For me, I love putting together a cute outfit with jewelry. But, I also go for athleisure and a hat sometimes. There’s part of me that wants to argue that types of clothing options are just a social construct anyway. But, I also see how the way that you dress sends a message to the world about who you are as a person. I have been hanging out at home in very comfy clothes and realized that I needed something or had a craving for something and just quickly ran down to the store as is. So, I don’t really judge people too much on that kind of thing.

InactiveIMHO, I think those of us who enjoy dressing up is because of the specialness to it because we so rarely do it in a culture that so rarely sees it. This is an aside to ABF. I grew up in an era where everyone had a solar clothes dryer in their backyards… A clothes line. And as a young tike in a very small rural farming community, wander the grassy lane that ran behind houses in town, I often stopped to gawk at the “unmentionables” hanging out on the lines. They were all white. Ever since I have been fascinated by vintage lingerie. I made the machine that packaged LEGGs pantyhose into those chrome eggs so one could say I do have a history. But to this day, to be given a glimpse of stocking top! Cole Porter.
