ABFheaven is six years old, and over that time many accounts were created, the user visited the site for a while, and then drifted away. But they never deleted their account.

So when you use the Search Members function, you’ll see many accounts which were not active for a year, two years, three years. Etc.

Do users find this annoying? Or is it kinda nice to see this “history” of past members who simply …drifted …away …

    What to do?

    – Leave things as they are. No need to do anything. They might come back!

    – Or remove these abandoned accounts, make things tidier and more up to date. And if they are removed, what should be the time frame? In other words, delete them if they haven’t been active for a year? Two years? Three?

    Your comments are appreciated, thanks.

What’s one of your sayings boss man. Clean the cache. Your the boss, if you need to make space for potential new members, then remove the oldest non active first.
I love this site so much.
    Thank you boss man.

I think some people may take breaks from the site which is totally fine. My suggestion would be to remove inactive for a year or more.

I would first determine how long is too long and maybe send out an email blast to those accounts letting them know they have “X amount of time to respond before account deletion.”

As someone who has repeatedly checked through the years if an old user in my state is coming back if it’s been 3 years I think it’s safe to say they are not coming back. And should be removed to make space for new members (would hopefully make the site run more smoothly too)

As for the time frame for removal Id say start of the next year

As someone who drifted away…I do appreciate not getting booted. I would advocate for a longer period, but I do agree there has to be a line.

While it’s interesting to see who’s been here it’s also kind of frustrating. My vote is to delete after a year of inactivity. It would be nice if you could send a warning email but I don’t know how much of a hassle that would be administratively.
    GREAT site though!
Thank you for hosting and maintaining it!

I’d say give a warning at 11 months and then delete after one year

My initial thought was that six months is enough to determine a dead account, however I just saw someone come back after being gone since November 2024 so I think a year might be better.

One question I have is regarding puzzles etc, are they tied to user accounts so they would be gone also? If so that might be a good reason to make the timeout longer.

If needing server space isn’t an issue, I see no harm in letting dormant accounts sit. I can see a situation where a woman partners up for an ABF relationship, and thus goes inactive for the duration of the relationship, which could be years! If/when she comes back, she finds her inactive account has been deleted, she might get very upset to have to start over from scratch, upload pics, get re-approved, etc. Not to mention that her message and contact history would be deleted. What if she wanted to re-contact YOU because you two had a nice dialog going before she went inactive? Or, you saw that a former female contact logged in recently who you had a previous dialog with, and you decided to send her a fresh message to try to re-kindle the dialog? It’s hard enough getting female users on this site; let’s not place unnecessary obstacles in their pathway back to active user status.

If possible, leave the data intact and include on the Search page “Show users active in the past [1d / 2w / 3m / 1y / anytime].” And let people shape the haystack as they wish. (Unless it’s really a perf/cost issue).

I agree with TikiKali. ABF is often a long-term lifestyle, situations can be stable for years and then needs or circumstances change etc.

You could programme the system to send an automatic email after a chosen duration of inactivity that requests permission to delete; if they confirm agreement then delete it, otherwise leave it dormant (unless this causes serious IT or operational difficulties).

Leave the abandoned accounts alone. I may be a cynical bastard, but I think that the abandoned accounts stand as a reminder that the chances of finding what we are looking for are remote at best. I believe the main reason for the abandoned accounts is that the people who started them had unrewarding experiences here. Maybe they were treated badly; maybe their expectations were unrealistic. Who knows? But I think they should stand unless they are taking up needed space. History is history.

    I agree overall,
Clearing the role within reasonable time frame of maybe 3 years.
After 3 years, you are akmost a different oerson and starting fresh keeps the profiles real.
However, people need to know that extended inactivity will be addressed after x amount of years. Not sure what creating a macro to send out an email woukd take at that time.
