Hello everyone,

I wanted to write a quick post about the foods that I have prepared in the name of getting more oats in me. As I had mentioned in my prior post about galactagogues, I just can’t stand the texture of oatmeal. And, oatmeal is frequently recommended for increasing milk supply.

Ladies and gents, please chime in via the comments: what are your go-to lactation-friendly recipes?

Rolled Oats Blackberry Yogurt Parfait

Ingredients:

    • 1/2 cup of rolled oats
    • 1 cup of greek yogurt
    • 1/2 cup of blackberries
    • Water (enough to reach your desired consistency)

I just mix all the ingredients together in a bowl or mason jar. I wait 5 minutes and then I pounce on the meal. I love this snack because it is super quick to assemble, tastes really good, and is a perfect 3 pm energy pick me up.

Steelcut Oats Mushroom Risotto

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups vegetable stock
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 leek (white and light green part only), halved lengthwise then cut crosswise into thin slices
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 12 ounces assorted mushrooms, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves
  • 1/4 cup dry white wine
  • 1 cup steel cut Irish oatmeal (not the quick-cooking kind)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, for garnish

Directions:

    1. In a medium saucepan with a lid, heat stock over medium heat until simmering, then reduce heat to low and keep covered.
    2. Meanwhile, melt butter in a large high-sided skillet over medium-high heat. Add leek and salt; cook 2 minutes, stirring frequently. Add garlic, mushrooms, and thyme; cook 7 to 8 minutes or until mushrooms are very deeply browned, stirring frequently. Add wine, cook 1 minute, stirring constantly.
    3. Reduce heat to medium. Add oatmeal; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Add 2 ladles of hot stock, cook until oats have absorbed almost all of the liquid. From this point, you’ll continue adding stock, 1 ladle at a time, and stirring frequently (you do NOT need to stir constantly). The oats should take about 25 minutes to cook (taste to make sure they are tender).
    4. To finish, vigorously stir in 1/4 cup cheese. Serve in warm bowls garnished with parsley and extra cheese.
Lactation Cookie Recipe

Ingredients:

    • 1/4 cup flaxseed meal
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 1/3 cup coconut oil (melted and cooled)
    • 1 cup stevia
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1 2/3 cup almond flour
    • 1 cup old fashioned rolled oats
    • 1/4 cup brewer’s yeast (use the debittered kind if possible)
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 2/3 cup chocolate chips ( I prefer dark chocolate chips)

Directions:

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Combine the flaxseed with the water and wait for 5 minutes.
    3. Mix in the coconut oil, stevia, and vanilla extract (whisk together until smooth and well combined).
    4. Mix in the brewer’s yeast, baking soda, cinnamon, salt.
    5. Fold in the almond flour.
    6. Mix in the chocolate chips.
    7. Use a medium cookie scoop and place dough on a prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart. You should get about 20 cookies. If you want thicker cookies, leave them as is. If you want slightly thinner cookies, very gently push ONLY the top of the cookie down a bit. Don’t over flatten.
    8. Bake cookies for 10-13 minutes until edges are just slightly golden brown around the edges. Once cookies come out of the oven, sprinkle the tops with fancy sea salt.
    9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 10-15 minutes before removing and transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling. Leaving them on the baking sheet will help them settle up, harden and hold together.
