I have recently been looking into how to induce lactation and pumping. Of course because I’m still so new to everything and I’m still learning if you have any tips they are greatly appreciated. I bought a manual breast pump today and have been using it but I noticed there is this clear liquid that comes out and I’m just curious as to what it is and what it means?
July 13, 2022 at 7:44 am #163925It could be that what you’re seeing is colostrum. That’s a fluid which you start to make before the milk comes in in earnest, so if you’re seeing it you may be on the right track! I’d be surprised if you see it the very first time you pump, but everybody’s body is different so it’s not impossible. I’d say keep going and see what happens 🙂
July 13, 2022 at 10:24 am #163938You are not seeing colostrum as it is only possible to produce when a pregnancy had occurred.
I am inducing on and off since last August and I get clear fluid some days and other days white or green liquid. I have read up on it and all are normal even the green. I know when I first started I bad little yellow coloured tiny clumps which were the milk ducts clearing out followed days later by clear liquid. I don’t want to get your Hope’s up as a year later I still dont have milk even when I introduced domperidone and pumped religiously every 2 hours.
If you want to ask anything feel free to pm me.
July 14, 2022 at 1:37 am #164221Agree with JB, it is NOT colostrum. The clear fluid, or discolored fluid, is a sign your pumping is working. Your breasts are clearing out dead cell tissue, preparing. Everyone’s pace is different.

July 14, 2022 at 1:34 pm #164414Breasts naturally produce a liquid when suckled or pumped. It’s a kind of lubricant and can vary in colour. It isn’t an indication of milk production or anything else really.
July 24, 2022 at 6:56 pm #169227The clear fluid also help a oily lubricate, that’s secreted by the glands. Think of it as a tune up before the milk is to arrive. The body is naturally cleaning it self out and preparing for milk.
