The Hunger Virus
(A dark future-history.)At first it was a joke. Maybe all those men’s beer bellies would shrink and they would turn into hot, trim underwear models! Haha!
But quickly the jokes turned to real concern, then fear, then panic. Men were hungry, and no amount of food satisfied them. They indeed lost weight. Then they began starving. The hospitals filled up, and men too weak to move lay in endless rows on the sidewalks outside them. And then the men began dying!
Rumors arose that a genetic biological weapon, designed to kill only an opposing army’s men, had escaped from a clandestine lab, with far more devastating effect than ever intended. Others blamed it on divine retribution for mankind’s – and men’s – sins and errors.
But it didn’t matter. ALL men were dying, and this heralded the eventual end of humanity itself!
Partisan bickering was intense, but the magnitude of the crisis finally cut through it all. Crash programs to understand the problem began on a desperate, all-out war-like footing. No amount of money or resources of any kind was too much to burn on this research, and every laboratory and university and hospital began a non-stop 24/7 drive to find the cause and a solution.
Then a new rumor started from a strange little corner of the internet, that a small subset of men were not dying. They didn’t experience any symptoms at all! Those men, who were actually flourishing, were odd, cult-like devotees, along with their partners, of “Adult Breast Feeding” and “Adult Nursing Relationships!”
Overnight, the price of pumped human breast milk shot up from one or two dollars an ounce to $10, then $100, then $1,000 per ounce or more. But it wasn’t enough. It helped a little, but at best it only reduced the rate at which starvation was occurring.
No, only those who nursed their partners directly seemed completely immune. The Hunger Virus, as it was called, was blocked by a unique enzyme in human breast milk. But this enzyme, stubbornly impossible to create in the lab, had a very short “half life,” and it quickly broke down once expressed. To actually survive, men had to be nursed by women directly!
Desperate government messaging began, extolling all lactating women to become the saviors of humanity by nursing as many men as possible! Nursing centers were set up in every town and city, where women were provided with funds and every other assistance so they could efficiently nurse long lines of men. Private wet-nurses became the highest-paid workers of all, until the mansions of the wealthy were burned down over the rich keeping these “maids” for themselves.
It still wasn’t enough, and before a year passed, about 90% of all men had perished, until a balance between nursing women and the men who needed to be nursed to survive was finally reached.
The military-industrial complex was abandoned as irrelevant. All other costs of men’s vanity, avarice and power-seeking ceased. Global warming was no more. All war and similar strife ended.
Within a few generations, the population stood at no more than a tenth of its old peak. The only real currency of importance was the loving nourishment provided by women. Men and women bonded as never before, for life. They spent much of their days in each other’s arms, men at their partner’s bosoms. No-one wanted to return to the old ways.
Finally, all of the noble yearnings of centuries of poets, dreamers, lovers and song-writers had come to pass: At last, the world had become a healthy, verdant, garden-planet of eternal peace and love!
