I’m creating this post as a way for myself and other women to share false information on inducing, and provide the accurate information.

There are a lot of misconceptions being spread by men and some women, not cool. If you have never induced lactation you have no personal experience to share. Having had a few nursing partners does not make you an expert, and what works for one woman may not work for another. Spouting off the experience of a few nursing partners is nothing more than anecdotal evidence. I am 2 years into inducing and I breast fed 5 kids, and I still do not consider myself an expert, but I do have a ton of knowledge and experience.

Misconception: Fenugreek. Claim: Fenugreek is great for inducing lactation. This is incorrect, fenugreek is for increasing volume, not inducing. Fenugreek should not not be taken prior to milk production starting. additional disclaimer regarding fenugreek, it has completely dried up the milk supply for a lot of women, this supplement should be taken after all other options have been exhausted. Starting off with the max dosage is not recommended either, start with a lower dose to see if it causes a drop in your milk supply.

Misconception: Breast will leak once your milk comes in, slightly inaccurate. While this is possible for some women that have induced, it does not happen for most. Women that induce lactation rarely produce more than 2 ounces per breast every couple of hours, and the majority of women that induce do not experience ‘let down’. Let down is the cause leaks most of the time, so with the absence of let down the likelihood of leaking is pretty slim for most women. Nursing pads are helpful for protecting your clothes from the lotions, and other lubricants used while breast pumping, no one wants oil stains on the breast of their favorite shirt.

Last one for the night, I’ll add more tomorrow. Site members are welcome to post about other misconceptions.

Misconception: A breast pump is needed to induce lactation, false.
Marmet massage is actually more effective at stimulating all areas of the breast. Having someone to suckle is even better than marmet massage and using a pump. If you choose to use a breast pump, as most of us do, make sure you’re doing marmet massages to remove as much of the remaining milk in the breast as possible.

I am trying to induce and this is useful thank you. No luck yet and Im getting disheartened. Have never had kids and also taking domperidone. Marmet feels almost like nothing when ypu do it, I dont quite understand how it csn be so effective. Hopefully I will get some results from it. How do ypu know when your milk might be about to start. Even drops. Do you have to hand express the first drops? How do you know when you are ready?

So glad you posted this. I too, see a lot of misinformation posted here. I’m also usually shaking my head that 9/10 times if a woman asks for inducing advice a man (who hasn’t personally induced) jumps to answer. Not that men cannot know some helpful facts or have second hand experiences, but I just feel like if you you haven’t actually experienced it personally, maybe you should let others respond, IMO

Nipple stimulation triggers the body to produce additional prolactin, that is the hormone that tells your body to produce breast milk. Even though marmet feels useless it does work. Marmet is great for inducing ,but you can use a Breast pump if you prefer. What makes marmet massage so effective is that it stimulates areas of the Breast that a pump doesn’t. Most women have tenderness, experience an increase in breast tissue, and feel fullness right before milk production starts. Your breast will also produce small drops of a sticky fluid that is clear of yellowish. That fluid is not colostrum, it is your breast clearing milk ducts and it normal.

Thank you for posting this! I have one to add.

Misconception: colostrum can only be made after the birth of a baby. It is caused from a hormonal shift that takes place when the placenta is no longer in the woman’s body. The yellow sticky drops that women may see when first beginning to lactate without a baby are from her ducts being cleared out of many different fluids and does not have the quality or properties found in colustrum.

    Thank you for this @lusciousliz

Misconception: Milk will be overflowing within two- seven days of induction or relactating.

Lactation can take at the least 2 months and upwards to a year to produce without the use Supplements and medication. Their is no use in asking DAILY “how’s the supply?” If a lady had drops yesterday, she’ll have drops the next day, she’s not shooting up ounces overnight. With the use of supplements and medication, it is still a process however the timeframe is much shorter but that doesn’t guarantee a robust supply. Partner be supportive not stressors.

Thank you so much for your answers. Ive had several men message with advice out of the blue but I really value all yours, obviously. How can someone who has never lactated tell you how it feels, and be so sure what will work for you lol. Currently pumping. Even if I dont get milk, I like the feel of it 🙂
