Does anyone know if the hormones that are produced when a women is lactating can make you feel down? I’ve generally been feeling quite relaxed since I induced lactation, but today I’ve been feeling quite down and I’m not sure why, just wondering if it’s related. Thanks.

Yes, unfortunately the hormone changes is probably why I gave up so many times. I am at a stage of depression part, started adding mucuna and marshmallow root into my tea (you brew it in minimal doses) to slightly improve your mood. Mucuna I get is in powder.

I add everything to my French press: 2tbsp of raspberry leaf, mucuna – 1scoop that is provided, moringa leaf powder, ashwaganda powder, shavatari, tsp of marshmallow root, tsp of Hawthorne (it improves cardiovascular system), about 1/8 cup of fennel seeds, and that is all. I then pour over boiling water for almost 1L volume, put over top,and press about 15-20min after starting the brew. Then press down. I make this 2x daily. I also drink water and 1 mug of coffee+mushroom extract.

The press I use keeps the heat for about 2h, so I highly recommend investing into one that is all stainless steel! I love mine, got it for coffee but using it for tea!

All my teas are organic, but fennel was only gmo-free, couldn’t find it organic. Anyways, if you need comprehensive links, let me know. It should kick in for me in about a week to feel better. I started about 5 days ago with this routine, I got lazy and had a break.

Ahh, for energy level and focus you can get ginkgo biloba (I got an organic 1 pound bag, it lasts for very long) and can add recommended dose into each tea mix.

Powders can be put into smoothies. So maybe try that as alternative. You can find your ways. Just read studies done on each ingredient because I am not your doctor and don’t know your conditions.

Ahh, marshmallow root has to be used in small quantities. It raises up estrogen slightly, in breastfeeding- it goes down. So maybe why you feel down.

Read up and see if any of my tea ingredients can work for you. It is a big expense at once to get it all, would start gathering stuff gradually or if you could see an endocrinologist then run your hormone levels. I am pretty much sure what I need now, but if it doesn’t help for me this time, I will definitely go test myself to check for hormones, my annual comes in close so may put it on my list, too.

So, same, I am down too. Waiting for things to improve. I almost stopped pumping then reminded myself it always happens. So, will see how it goes. Let me know if it helped at all for you – any of the stuff that I mentioned.

Some stuff I take because it is good for liver and breastfeeding, so you don’t need to do same, you can do marshmallow root tea only, for example, and maybe add some fennel seeds into it. Fennel seeds somewhat make me happy, lol, not sure if it is the smell or what, but try it and see for yourself!

Forgot to mention: i took break from vit D znd low vit D levels can give depression symptoms too. So good reminder- need to start taking it regularly again. Vit D makes breast tissue less dense do it is great for breastfeeding, fyi!

I guess in Europe, the organic products are “bio” marked, lol, sorry for the confusion.

Oh wow Kat, thanks for all that info! It does sound like a lot to be honest 🙈 I already drink fennel tea, but I buy it in tea bags and it doesn’t diffuse very well. I might try a few different things, starting with marshmallow. I’m sorry you’re feeling down, I hope you manage to power through this time. I am feeling like giving up today but I’ll probably regret it if I do, so I’ll persevere for now. I kind of feel like it’s meant to be that I lactate, since it just happened because I was enjoying pumping so much, so I feel like I would be abandoning what’s meant for me if I give up, if that makes sense?

Yeah, it makes sense! That exactly is what I am feeling.

Get all teas as loose teas, no bags. It is easier to dose and have control over ingredients.

Would recommend the vit D high dose every other day to see how you feel. Or ask your dr first to test you for it. When I clinically had very low D levels they made me take 50,000 units 1x a week. But, unless you test, then take around 1,000 units or 2,000 units daily not more. Too much is not gonna help either.

It’s also known as organic in the UK, not sure about the rest of Europe. I don’t think I’d better take that much vitamin D. I already take a multivitamin supplement which contains just over the recommended daily amount, so I think I’ll still with that.

Dr. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, is the “father” of holistic medicine in the US. He recommends 50,000 iu of Vitamin D3 1x per week. Because I live in a climate that is gray and cloudy for 6 months of the year, I take that dose from November-April. In the nice weather when I am outdoors and in the sunshine more, I take a maintanence dose of 35,000 iu once a week.

There is a product called “Sam e” (by Life Extension)which is also very good for low level depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). You can take up to 3 tablets per day. “Nevaton Forte” (by MediHerb-Standard Process) is a great product, containing, among a few other things, St. John’s Wort. Skullcap, schisandra and saffron are also in it. 1-2 Tablets a day with the “Sam e” is a great combination for elevating mood.

Thanks Yogi. This all looks expensive and the kind of thing I could easily get confused about 😵‍💫 but I appreciate your recommendations.

@rachyj youn can ask your dr for prescription for vit D3, it was much cheaper via prescription in here, but definitely go do the tests for vit D3 levels. Tell them you suddenly feel very low and you think it is hormones or D3 and they should send you to a lab. In here I pay a lot of money for annual checks but in UK is free or much cheaper I suppose. I would go testing route to avoid spending money on unnecessary stuff. FYI: DONT TAKE ANY SUPPLEMENTS OR VITAMINS 3 DAYS PRIOR. Hormone levels can be affected by it so you won’t get a full picture. Thyroid hormones I believe are affected by vit B and so on. I didn’t know and just found out after my last labs,my dr even did not know. I read it online. I was on high vit B dosage back then.

    @rachyj

The “Sam e” costs about $45 USD per month, and the “Nevaton Forte” costs about $35 USD per month. Both are available online. Agree with Kat that Vitamin D levels should be checked with a simple blood test before using supplementation. In the US, Vitamin D3 costs only about $8 per month.
